Why Not Wait?
If you’ve put off your chimney inspection until July, why not just put it off a little longer? There are several good reasons to schedule your inspection earlier rather than later. One very good reason is because we might find something that needs to be repaired. It’s easier for some repair work to be completed during the warmer summer months because mortar is easier to work with and bonds better when it is above 40 degrees. Although we can still do repair work when the temperature is colder, it will take special procedures. On top of that, if you wait to have the repair work done later in the season, it will take time away from using your fireplace during the cool weather of the fall season.
Bad Odors
One thing that we are looking for when we inspect your chimney is creosote build-up. Creosote is the residue that is left when smoke leaves your chimney. The chemicals produced from burning wood escape in the form of smoke up your chimney and out of your home. However, when the warm smoke hits the cooler surface at the top of your chimney, it condenses and forms creosote. This creosote is a fire hazard, and needs to be cleared out so that the chance of a chimney fire is reduced. However, another problem with creosote build-up is that, during summer months when it is hot and humid, the moisture mixes with the creosote and can give off a very unpleasant odor. This is another reason to have us come in soon and get that creosote cleaned out.
